Josh Radnor has built a career that reaches well beyond his best-known role as Ted Mosby on How I Met Your Mother. The Ohio-born actor has worked as a filmmaker, writer, stage performer and musician, developing a body of work that often focuses on relationships, creativity, personal growth and the uncertainties of adulthood.
Although television made him internationally famous, Radnor has repeatedly moved between film, theater and music rather than remaining tied to one profession.
Ohio Roots
Radnor was born on July 29, 1974, in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in the suburb of Bexley.
His parents, Alan and Carol Radnor, raised him and his two sisters in a Conservative Jewish household. His father worked as a lawyer, while his mother was a school counselor.
His early education included the Columbus Torah Academy, followed by Bexley High School. The combination of family, education and Jewish community played an important role in shaping his early years.
After high school, Radnor attended Kenyon College, where he studied theater. He later earned an MFA in acting from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Stage Beginnings
Before television turned him into a household name, Radnor established himself in theater.
He made his Broadway debut in 2002 in a production of The Graduate. Working on stage gave him experience that would later prove valuable when he moved into television and film.
He subsequently appeared in the Broadway production of Disgraced, further demonstrating his interest in serious dramatic theater alongside comedy.
Theater remained an important part of his professional identity even after his television career took off.
Ted Mosby
Radnor’s defining breakthrough came in 2005, when he was cast as architect and romantic idealist Ted Mosby in CBS’s How I Met Your Mother.
The sitcom ran for nine seasons, concluding in 2014. Ted served as the central character and narrator, recounting to his children the complicated story of how he eventually met their mother.
The role required Radnor to move between comedy, romance and more emotional storylines. His performance made him internationally recognizable and firmly connected his name with one of television’s most successful sitcoms of the era.
Even years after its finale, the series continues to attract new viewers through streaming and syndication.
Behind the Camera
Radnor did not limit himself to acting.
He wrote and directed Happythankyoumoreplease, his 2010 feature-film debut. The independent romantic comedy-drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.
Two years later, he followed it with Liberal Arts, another film that he wrote, directed and starred in.
Both projects reflected themes that recur throughout Radnor’s work: complicated relationships, changing expectations and the challenge of finding meaning during different stages of adulthood.
His filmmaking career established him as a creator rather than simply a performer.
Television Roles
After How I Met Your Mother, Radnor continued taking on television projects with very different tones.
He appeared in Mercy Street, the PBS historical medical drama set during the American Civil War. He later joined NBC’s musical drama Rise.
Radnor also became part of the cast of Amazon’s Hunters, appearing alongside Al Pacino in the series about a group pursuing Nazis in 1970s America.
These roles allowed him to move away from the familiar sitcom image associated with Ted Mosby and explore more dramatic material.
A Musician Too
Music represents another major part of Radnor’s creative life.
In 2016, he formed the folk duo Radnor & Lee with Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee.
The pair released their self-titled album, Radnor & Lee, in 2017, followed by Golden State in 2020. Their music draws heavily on acoustic instrumentation, introspective songwriting and themes of connection.
Radnor also developed a solo career.
His solo releases include One Eephus, a double album released in 2021, and Eulogy, Vol. I, which arrived in 2023.
The solo material gives him another outlet for exploring experiences that may not fit naturally into his acting or filmmaking work.
Meeting Jordana
Radnor’s personal life changed significantly in the early 2020s.
He met Jordana Jacobs, a clinical psychologist, at a sound meditation retreat in upstate New York in 2022.
Their relationship progressed quickly, and Radnor proposed in 2023 during a trip to Joshua Tree.
The couple married on January 6, 2024, during a snowy outdoor ceremony at Cedar Lakes Estate in New York.
The wedding marked Radnor’s first marriage.
Family Life
Radnor and Jacobs later welcomed their first child, a son, in late 2025.
The couple has generally maintained a relatively private approach to family life. Radnor’s relationship with Jacobs has nevertheless influenced his creative work, particularly his songwriting.
His 2023 album Eulogy, Vol. I was strongly shaped by his experiences with love, commitment and the prospect of building a life with another person.
Josh Radnor could easily have remained defined entirely by Ted Mosby. Instead, he has spent much of his career deliberately moving between disciplines.
Acting gave him his largest audience, but directing allowed him to tell his own stories. Theater kept him connected to live performance, while music gave him a more personal form of expression.
That variety is perhaps the most distinctive feature of his career.
More than a decade after How I Met Your Mother ended, Radnor continues to be recognized for Ted Mosby—but his professional journey encompasses considerably more. From the stages of Broadway and independent cinema to television dramas and folk music, he has built a career around following different creative interests rather than staying inside a single Hollywood category.
