Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia died from asphyxia by drowning after he was swept into deeper water during an Ateneo de Manila University basketball team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8, 2026.
The 19-year-old student-athlete was an incoming member of the Ateneo Blue Eagles and had already built a reputation as one of the Philippines’ promising young basketball players. His death, along with that of Nigerian teammate Divine Adili, 21, turned what was supposed to be a team activity into a major investigation involving Philippine law enforcement agencies.
Cause of Death
The Aurora Provincial Police Office said Baterbonia’s certificate of post-mortem examination listed asphyxia by drowning as his cause of death.
Aurora police chief Col. Percival Pineda said the post-mortem examination did not indicate bruising on Baterbonia’s body. Police also said no weights or foreign objects were found attached to the victims when their bodies were recovered.
The finding directly addressed some of the rumors that spread online after news of the deaths emerged.
What Happened?
Baterbonia and his teammates were taking part in a team-building activity at a beach resort in Dipaculao, Aurora.
According to reports, the basketball players were conducting a water-based exercise when several athletes were swept toward deeper water by strong currents.
Baterbonia and Adili were among those who were unable to return safely.
Authorities said the incident occurred away from the immediate shoreline of the resort, with reports placing the activity hundreds of meters from the property. The exact sequence of events became a central focus of the subsequent investigation.
The Rescue
The water conditions reportedly changed quickly, leaving several players struggling in the sea.
Two athletes were rescued, while Baterbonia and Adili disappeared beneath the water. Search and rescue efforts followed, and the two players were eventually recovered.
Emergency responders attempted to revive them, but their conditions were fatal.
Ateneo later confirmed that both student-athletes had died following the drowning incident and expressed condolences to their families, teammates and friends.
Rumors Debunked
In the days following Baterbonia’s death, disturbing claims circulated online alleging that his body showed signs of hazing or severe physical abuse.
Those claims were not supported by his actual post-mortem findings.
A July fact-check by VERA Files found that forensic images and descriptions being circulated as Baterbonia’s autopsy results actually belonged to another person who had died in Cebu City. The material had been incorrectly connected to the Ateneo player.
This distinction is important because the verified medical finding remains drowning-related asphyxia.
Investigation Begins
Although the initial police response treated the incident as a drowning, authorities quickly began examining whether negligence or other violations had contributed to the deaths.
The Philippine National Police launched an investigation, while the Department of Justice directed the National Bureau of Investigation to establish a task force to conduct a comprehensive and impartial probe.
The investigation was intended to determine whether there was sufficient evidence to support criminal charges against individuals involved in organizing or conducting the activity.
Scene Reconstructed
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group later reconstructed the scene in Dipaculao.
Investigators worked with local disaster-response personnel to establish what happened during the June 8 activity and determine how the athletes ended up in dangerous water conditions.
The reconstruction was part of a broader effort to establish responsibility rather than simply record the deaths as an unfortunate accident.
NBI Findings
The investigation took a significant turn in July.
The NBI referred its findings to the Department of Justice and recommended charges against former Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin and several members of the basketball program.
The bureau recommended charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against Baldwin, six assistant coaches and a physical therapist. It also recommended simple-negligence charges against an athletic director and three individuals connected with the resort.
These were investigative recommendations, not final convictions. The DOJ is responsible for evaluating the reports and determining how the case should proceed.

Baterbonia’s death has raised serious questions about safety standards in collegiate sports.
Team-building activities are intended to strengthen relationships between athletes, but organizers also have a responsibility to assess environmental hazards and ensure that participants have appropriate protection and emergency support.

The Philippine Sports Commission formed a multi-stakeholder panel involving sports and education bodies to help establish a clearer account of the tragedy and examine existing safeguards.
Remembering Rene
Before his death, Baterbonia was viewed as a promising young basketball talent.
He had represented Agusan del Sur and was named Most Valuable Player of the boys’ basketball tournament at the 2025 Palarong Pambansa. He was preparing to begin his collegiate journey with Ateneo’s Blue Eagles when his life was suddenly cut short.
His death remains intertwined with the tragedy that also claimed the life of Adili, another young player whose future was similarly cut short.
