Johnny Cash’s public image was built around black suits, a deep voice and songs that spoke about hardship, faith, love and redemption. Behind that famous persona was a large Arkansas family and, later, a household of his own that became closely connected to country music.
Cash was born into a poor farming family during the Great Depression and eventually became a father of five biological children. Two marriages shaped his adult family life: first to Vivian Liberto and later to June Carter. His children followed very different paths, although several remained connected to music and the arts.
His Parents
Johnny Cash was born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas, to Ray Cash and Carrie Cloveree Rivers Cash.
The family moved to the New Deal agricultural community of Dyess, Arkansas, in 1935. There, the Cash children grew up in difficult economic circumstances, working on the family’s cotton farm.
Those experiences became an important part of Johnny’s identity. Poverty, hard labor, faith and the struggles of ordinary working people repeatedly appeared in his songwriting.
His childhood was not simply background material for his music. It provided the emotional vocabulary that later made songs such as “I Walk the Line” and “Five Feet High and Rising” resonate with listeners.
His Siblings
Johnny was one of seven Cash children.
His older brother Jack was particularly important in his childhood. Jack was seriously injured in a table-saw accident at a school workshop in 1944. He died from his injuries at only 14, while Johnny was 12.
The tragedy stayed with Johnny for the rest of his life. His brother’s death became one of the most painful memories associated with his youth and was frequently discussed in accounts of the singer’s formative years.
Johnny’s other siblings were Roy, Louise, Reba, Joanne and Tommy.
Tommy Cash later became a country musician himself, establishing a professional career separate from his older brother. Joanne also developed a connection with gospel music.
The Cash siblings therefore carried elements of the family’s musical tradition into their own lives.
Vivian Liberto
Johnny Cash married Vivian Liberto on August 7, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas.
The couple had met when they were teenagers at a roller-skating rink in San Antonio. Their relationship developed while Cash was serving in the U.S. Air Force, and they eventually began raising a family.
Vivian became the mother of Cash’s first four children: Rosanne, Kathy, Cindy and Tara.
Their marriage coincided with the explosive growth of Cash’s music career. As his fame expanded, however, the demands of touring and his struggles with drug addiction placed enormous pressure on their relationship.

June Carter
Cash’s second marriage was to June Carter, a member of the legendary Carter Family and an accomplished performer in her own right.
Their relationship developed through years of performing together. Cash proposed to June onstage in 1968, and they married on March 1 of that year in Franklin, Kentucky.
The marriage became one of country music’s best-known partnerships.
June was not simply Cash’s wife. She was a collaborator, performer and major source of support during some of the most difficult periods of his life.
They remained married until June’s death on May 15, 2003. Johnny died only a few months later, on September 12, 2003.
Rosanne Cash
Rosanne Cash, born in 1955, is Johnny’s eldest daughter.
She eventually created a distinguished career of her own as a singer-songwriter. Rather than attempting to reproduce her father’s sound, Rosanne developed a sophisticated style drawing from country, folk, rock and Americana.
Her albums and songwriting earned critical acclaim and multiple Grammy Awards.
She has also written extensively about her family, including her relationship with her father and the experience of growing up as the daughter of a global music icon.
Kathy Cash
Kathy Cash, born in 1956, largely avoided a professional career in music.
She has maintained a considerably quieter public profile than her sister Rosanne, although she has participated in projects concerning her father’s life and legacy.
Kathy has also spoken publicly about her mother, Vivian, helping provide another perspective on the complicated history of the Cash family.
Cindy Cash
Cindy Cash was born in 1959 and had a closer connection to her father’s performing career during her youth.
She performed with Johnny Cash and members of the Carter Family as a teenager. She later became involved in writing and shared memories of growing up within one of America’s most famous musical families.
Her experiences offer a glimpse into a childhood that was anything but ordinary.
Tara Cash
Tara Cash, born in 1961, is Johnny’s youngest daughter with Vivian Liberto.

John Carter Cash

Carlene, June’s daughter with country singer Carl Smith, became a successful country performer and songwriter.
Rosie Nix Adams, June’s daughter from her earlier marriage to Edwin “Rip” Nix, also pursued music. She died in 2003, shortly before Johnny Cash.
