One of Clark’s most consequential Silicon Valley connections is former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
Clark and Schmidt had previously been in a relationship. According to The Wall Street Journal, she introduced Schmidt to Amodei when Anthropic was getting started.
Schmidt subsequently became an important early investor in the company, making Clark’s personal network relevant to Anthropic’s early financing story.
The connection illustrates the kind of informal influence Clark appears to exercise: she does not need an Anthropic job title to introduce people who can materially affect the company’s trajectory.
Her Tech Career
Clark had already developed an entrepreneurial background before her relationship with Amodei became associated with Anthropic.
She worked at Leap Motion, a technology company known for developing motion-sensing hardware, where she served as head of revenue. The company was later acquired by Ultraleap in 2019.
