Nick Chubb has officially retired from the NFL at age 30, bringing an eight-season career to an emotional close.
The veteran running back announced his decision on August 21, 2026, through a heartfelt social-media message. After years of producing at an elite level and overcoming serious knee injuries, Chubb said he was ready to leave football behind while feeling good about where his life and career had reached.
His retirement ends one of the most memorable running back careers of the modern Cleveland Browns era. Chubb spent seven seasons in Cleveland before finishing his playing career with the Houston Texans in 2025. He leaves the NFL with 7,349 rushing yards, 54 rushing touchdowns and four Pro Bowl selections.
The Announcement
Chubb’s retirement message was personal rather than dramatic.
He explained that he had known for some time that his playing days were coming to an end, but he was finally ready to make the decision public. He reflected on the journey from being a 12-year-old dreaming about football to becoming an established NFL star.
One of the strongest themes in his message was his health. After enduring major injuries during both college and his professional career, Chubb emphasized that life beyond football matters and that protecting his long-term health had become increasingly important.

His Final Season
Chubb’s final NFL season came with the Houston Texans in 2025.
He appeared in 15 games and made nine starts, finishing with 506 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 122 carries. He also caught 13 passes for 67 yards.
The numbers were well below the peak of his Cleveland years, but the season gave Chubb an opportunity to compete again after the devastating knee injury that threatened to end his career several years earlier.
Houston finished the regular season 12-5 and reached the AFC Divisional Round, allowing Chubb to end his career as part of a winning team.
Cleveland Years
Chubb became synonymous with Cleveland football during his seven seasons with the Browns.
Selected 35th overall in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Georgia, he immediately established himself as one of the league’s most powerful and efficient runners.
As a rookie, he rushed for 996 yards. He then followed with four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 2019 through 2022, earning Pro Bowl honors in each of those four years.
His best rushing season came in 2022, when he recorded 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging exactly 5.0 yards per carry.
By the time he left Cleveland, Chubb had accumulated 6,843 rushing yards for the franchise, ranking third in Browns history behind Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly.
The Injuries
Chubb’s career cannot be discussed without mentioning the injuries that repeatedly tested him.
In 2015, while playing at Georgia, he suffered a severe knee injury against Tennessee. He eventually returned and rebuilt himself into one of college football’s premier running backs.
Years later, the same knee suffered another devastating setback.
During Week 2 of the 2023 NFL season, Chubb sustained a major multi-ligament injury to his left knee against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The injury required extensive treatment and a lengthy rehabilitation process.

His consistency was especially impressive early in his career. From 2019 through 2022, he produced four straight seasons of at least 1,000 rushing yards.
His Browns Legacy
Cleveland’s connection with Chubb goes beyond statistics.
He became one of the franchise’s most respected players during a period when the Browns were rebuilding their identity. His physical running style, consistency and relatively quiet personality made him a particularly popular figure among Cleveland supporters.
The Browns have already indicated that they would like Chubb to return to Cleveland for a ceremonial one-day contract so that he can officially retire as a member of the organization.
That would provide a fitting conclusion to a relationship that began when Cleveland drafted him in 2018.
Georgia Roots
Before becoming an NFL star, Chubb established his reputation at the University of Georgia.
He played four seasons for the Bulldogs from 2014 through 2017 and finished his college career with 4,769 rushing yards and 48 touchdowns.
His combination of strength, acceleration and vision made him one of Georgia’s defining offensive players of the era. His ability to recover from his first major knee injury also became an early example of the determination that would characterize his professional career.
