Billy Gibbons has spent more than half a century turning blues guitar into a sound that is instantly recognizable. As the guitarist and lead vocalist of ZZ Top, the Texas-born musician helped create some of rock’s most enduring riffs while building an image defined by sunglasses, a towering beard and an unmistakable stage presence.
In 2026, Gibbons occupies a different position within the band. Following the deaths of bassist Dusty Hill in 2021 and drummer Frank Beard on August 17, 2026, he is now the sole surviving member of ZZ Top’s classic lineup. Beard died at his Texas ranch while receiving hospice care, and the band’s representative said his cause of death had not been disclosed.
Early Years
Born William Frederick Gibbons on December 16, 1949, Gibbons developed an interest in music while growing up in Texas. His early exposure to blues and rock would eventually shape the guitar style that became his trademark.
Before ZZ Top, he formed the psychedelic blues-rock group The Moving Sidewalks. The band became known in the Houston area and even opened for Jimi Hendrix, giving the young guitarist an opportunity to perform alongside one of his major influences.
That early experience helped establish the foundation for Gibbons’ distinctive approach: heavy blues phrasing, economical riffs and a tone capable of sounding enormous without relying on excessive complexity.
ZZ Top
Gibbons formed ZZ Top in Houston in 1969.
The classic lineup eventually consisted of Gibbons on guitar and vocals, Dusty Hill on bass and vocals, and Frank Beard on drums. Together, they developed a muscular blend of blues, boogie and hard rock that became one of the defining sounds of Texas rock.
The trio’s longevity was extraordinary. Hill remained with the group until his death in 2021, while Beard performed with ZZ Top for more than five decades before his death this month.
The Big Break
ZZ Top initially built its reputation through relentless touring and a series of blues-heavy albums.
The group’s commercial breakthrough accelerated during the 1970s, with songs such as “La Grange” establishing Gibbons as one of the era’s most distinctive guitar players.
The band’s sound later evolved without abandoning its roots. That flexibility became especially important in the 1980s, when ZZ Top embraced synthesizers, drum machines and music-video production.
MTV Fame
The 1983 album Eliminator transformed ZZ Top into an international phenomenon.
Tracks including “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” became huge hits, while their elaborate videos introduced the band to an entirely new audience.
Gibbons’ appearance became part of the attraction. His long beard, dark glasses and flamboyant Texas-rock style were instantly recognizable, while Hill’s matching beard created the visual impression of a carefully designed pair.
Yet underneath the imagery was Gibbons’ guitar playing, which remained the central musical ingredient.
Pearly Gates
Among guitar enthusiasts, Gibbons is closely associated with a legendary 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard known as “Pearly Gates.”
The instrument has been a major part of his sound and reputation for decades. Gibbons has frequently discussed its importance, and the guitar has become almost as famous among ZZ Top followers as the musician himself.
His playing is not based purely on speed. Instead, Gibbons is known for making relatively compact blues phrases sound powerful through tone, rhythm, bends and carefully chosen notes.
After Dusty
Hill’s death in July 2021 changed ZZ Top permanently.
Before his death, Hill reportedly wanted the group to continue performing. Elwood Francis, who had worked as ZZ Top’s longtime guitar technician, subsequently assumed bass duties.
Francis became part of the touring version of the band, allowing Gibbons to continue performing the catalog he and his longtime bandmates had built.
Losing Frank Beard
The death of Frank Beard has now created another defining moment.
Gibbons described Beard as an exceptionally innovative drummer and a true Texan in his tribute. Beard’s playing had supplied the rhythmic backbone of ZZ Top for decades, making his contribution just as important to the band’s identity as Gibbons’ guitar work.
Beard’s death leaves Gibbons as the only surviving member of the classic trio.
ZZ Top had already been performing with Michael Monahan on drums during Beard’s recent health-related absence. The band had announced that it intended to continue after Beard’s death, consistent with his wishes.
Solo Career
Gibbons has also maintained an active career outside ZZ Top.
His solo work has allowed him to explore musical influences that do not always fit neatly into the band’s established sound.
His albums include Perfectamundo in 2015, The Big Bad Blues in 2018 and Hardware in 2021. These records demonstrate his interest in blues, rock, Latin-inspired sounds and other musical traditions.
He has also toured with the BFGs, featuring musicians including drummer Chris “Whipper” Layton and Hammond organist Mike Flanigin.
Still Performing
Despite the enormous changes surrounding ZZ Top, Gibbons has continued to perform.
Recent 2026 concerts have featured Gibbons alongside Elwood Francis and Michael Monahan, reflecting the band’s evolving lineup following Beard’s health problems and eventual death. Contemporary concert reports show that the group continued its European schedule before returning to the United States.
Gibbons has made clear that ZZ Top’s story is not necessarily finished.
