Travis Barker has opened up about one of the relationship habits he and Kourtney Kardashian rely on to keep their marriage strong: they try not to go to sleep while angry with each other.
The Blink-182 drummer, 50, recently described the approach as one of the most important rules in their relationship. For Barker and Kardashian, resolving disagreements before bedtime is less about avoiding conflict and more about making sure resentment does not linger into the next day.
Their method can apply to anything from a significant disagreement to a small misunderstanding over plans or a missed message.
Their Rule
Barker said the couple makes an effort to address tension before going to sleep.
Rather than allowing an argument to remain unresolved overnight, they try to talk through what caused the frustration and acknowledge each other’s perspective.
That does not necessarily mean every disagreement is immediately solved. Instead, the emphasis appears to be on restoring a sense of connection before the day ends.
Barker explained that even seemingly insignificant moments can become important when they are left unaddressed.
A missed text or confusion about lunch plans, for example, can create unnecessary tension if neither person explains what happened.
Taking Responsibility
For Barker, accountability is a major part of that process.
He described situations in which one partner can simply acknowledge a mistake, apologize and explain what happened. A short apology can prevent a minor misunderstanding from becoming a larger emotional issue.
The approach also leaves room for both people to recognize when they need some breathing room.
That balance—addressing a disagreement while also allowing space when necessary—appears to be central to the couple’s approach to communication.
Barker’s comments suggest that their goal is not to eliminate arguments but to avoid allowing unresolved feelings to create emotional distance.
Before Romance
Barker and Kardashian’s relationship began after years of friendship.
Before they became romantically involved, the pair already shared an interest in fitness and wellness. Barker has said that working out and running together helped build their connection long before they became a couple.
That history gave them an existing foundation when their friendship eventually developed into a romance.
For Barker, sharing an interest in health and exercise remains an important part of their bond.
From Friends to Partners
The relationship became public in early 2021, after the pair had spent considerable time together.
Barker proposed to Kardashian later that year, and their relationship quickly moved toward marriage.
The couple’s wedding story unfolded through several celebrations rather than a single ceremony.
They first participated in an unofficial Las Vegas ceremony in April 2022 following the Grammy Awards. They then legally married in Santa Barbara in May before celebrating with family and friends in Portofino, Italy, later that month.
The Italian event became one of the most recognizable celebrity weddings of the year.
Three Weddings
The Portofino celebration reflected Kardashian’s distinctive fashion style and the couple’s close relationship with Italian luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana.
Kardashian wore a custom Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda lace mini dress paired with a dramatic veil. The design included floral embroidery and imagery inspired by the Virgin Mary, echoing imagery associated with one of Barker’s tattoos.
The fashion became a major talking point surrounding the wedding, while the celebration itself brought together members of both families.
The multiple ceremonies also reflected how the couple chose to mark different stages of their marriage with their loved ones.
Growing Family
Barker and Kardashian later welcomed their first child together.
Their son, Rocky Thirteen Barker, was born on November 1, 2023, in Los Angeles.
The arrival of Rocky expanded an already large blended family. Kardashian shares three children—Mason, Penelope and Reign—with Scott Disick. Barker has two children, Landon and Alabama, with his former wife Shanna Moakler, and he has also helped raise his stepdaughter Atiana De La Hoya.
Together, the family represents a mixture of biological children, stepfamily relationships and shared parenting responsibilities.
That family structure makes communication particularly important, especially as Barker and Kardashian balance their marriage with parenting and demanding careers.
Wellness Bond
Health and wellness have remained another common thread between the couple.
Barker has previously spoken about how meaningful it was to find someone who shared his enthusiasm for exercise and healthy living.
Their connection was initially built through everyday activities such as running and working out together. That shared routine eventually became part of a much deeper relationship.
For the drummer, having a partner who understands and enjoys the same lifestyle has been an important source of closeness.
Barker’s Next Chapter
Barker is also entering another significant period professionally with the release of Louder Than Fear, a documentary examining his life and career.
The film explores his rise as a drummer, his experiences in the music industry and his recovery following the 2008 plane crash that left him with severe injuries.
The documentary’s release provides another look at the experiences that shaped Barker outside his public identity as the drummer of Blink-182.
Staying Connected
Barker’s comments about his marriage ultimately focus on something much simpler than celebrity weddings or public appearances.
For him and Kardashian, maintaining closeness appears to depend on small, repeated choices: communicating openly, accepting responsibility, apologizing when necessary and making an effort to resolve tension.
Their rule about not going to bed angry does not mean disagreements never happen. Instead, it reflects an effort to prevent everyday frustrations from becoming lasting resentment.
After friendship, marriage, a growing blended family and years in the public spotlight, Barker says that keeping the connection intact remains a daily priority.
And for the couple, sometimes that can start with something as simple as saying, “I’m sorry,” before the day is over.
